When you lose the one who has grown old with you you feel so empty. A space that will always be there. Another pet will enter the home and be just as loved but it will never replace a loss. As the operator of a cat shelter so many are lost soon after they enter our doors from abuse, neglect and disease. The tears that flow when you kiss these animals goodbye flow for days. I lost my friend Molly, Sunday 05/06/01. As I write this I am fighting tears. Molly was born in North Carolina in August 2000. My step-son is in the military and bought it for my wife's birhtday in November. When he brought it with him on a visit here in Texas, I didn't know that he brought it for Maria. She was a little white ball of fur. Molly loved everyone. Maria was especially taken. I found her to be a very lovable, little dog. It was only when Pete packed to return to North Carolina did I learn that Molly was already home. I can't work and we stretch Maria's income to live. Maria cried as I resisted the gift. I'm not inconsiderate. Simply put, I didn't want to be in a position where I couldn't provide the care Molly needed. Maria wanted to have Molly for a pet. She already had strong feeling for the little dog. Molly loved me unconditionally. In less than 6 months, I am filled with memories of a friend who did not ask anything of me. This past Friday, Molly didn't eat her food and wasn't her usual self. We didn't do many things. But she was either playing with her toy bone, playing with her rope, chasing the cat (a game that both animals loved) or sleeping near the television. She was rather unenergetic. I thought it would pass. Saturday morning she wasn't any better. I kept a close watch on her. She wanted to go outside to "do her business" many times more than usual. She spit up mucous many times as well. I was concerned, but not worried. I was certain that it would pass. Sunday morning she was worse and had so little energy, I called the vet. He explained that she was sufferring from several symptoms and would require several treatments and tests. He said to bring her in and I would need to pay $200 to leave her. After explaining that I could not afford this he gave me a home remedy. He said that if she made it until Monday morning, to bring her in at that time. I was to give her electrolytes, something to settle her stomach (liquid antacid), liquid nutrition (ensure), and a half of a crushed anti-biotic we had left from a prescription (one daily dose) He asked us the name and said that he used it with sucess in the past. Each hour I was to give her the electrolytes, the ensure and a litle of the antacid by the teaspoon. Molly seemed to take the first doses alright. I was worried more about her, now. The vet indicated that if it was bacterial, then the antibiotic would take a little while to work. The antacid seemed to work quickly, because she wasn't spitting anything up anymore. Hour-by-hour, we kept giving her the treatment, but she was getting weaker. I called another vet and she agreed with the first vet's advice. She called another vet and he recommended that we take her into the clinic. The on-call vet was the original vet and he wasn't able to begin treatment without the $200 fee. I never imagined the feelings I would have as Molly lay in my arms dying. I placed her on a towel on a large pillow next to me. I told my wife to come over to Molly and talk to her. I told Maria that Molly was about to go where dogs go when they die. Maria had been sitting a few feet away softly crying. We both moved closely and told her that she was a "good dog" and that we loved her. She wasn't moving and she gasped. I moved my fingers along her side as gently as I could. A few moments later she gasped again. I felt a pain in my chest. A few moments later, she stretched out both her front and back legs. Then, Molly was gone. It was aroung 7:00 pm. I touched her and cried. Maria was crying, too. We placed her towel in a box. I placed Molly on the towel an covered her. I placed her other towel on her. Then, I picked up her toy bone. She loved that toy. I asked Maria if I should put it in the box. I knew that I wouldn't be able to look at it after Molly was gone. Many happy hours had been spent chewing on it. I placed it on the towel. I picked up her rope. She loved to play tug-of-war. I tried hard not to think about her pulling as hard as a 10 pound dog could pull on it. I tried hard to keep from the thought that she would not pull on it anymore. It hurt as I placed the rope on the towel. I said, These are Molly's. They should be with her." I looked at Maria as I said this. Maria looked so sad. When she's especially sad, her cheekbones turn brown. It's like someone marked two places on here face about the size of quarters below her eyes. I walked slowly to the porch and picked up her food and water dish. It had a little food and water in it. I did not want to do this. I poured the water out and walked to the kitchen. I poured out the food. I felt so sad because I knew that I wouldn't be feeding her again. I placed it between the bone and the rope. Molly had lost all the expression on her face. She suddenly looked so small. I was careful to place the toys and the bowl on the towel as easily as I could. But a pain was steadily growing in my chest. I placed the lid on the box and went over to Maria. I held here and hugged her. We called her brother to ask if we could bury Molly behind his house. It was difficult to watch as the hole was dug. Each time the shovel cut the hard Texas dirt, I had to focus on my breathing. Each breath was difficult. Then the box was placed into the hole and I watched as the last bit of the box was covered. Unconditional love is sacred. There can be no loneliness when unconditional love is present. One eliminates the other. It is the thought that one day I will see her eyes and smile, again that makes me smile. It is not an easy smile. I will not see Molly again in this world. My memories of her as she ran from one end of the living room to the other remind me of how happy she was. She never asked anything of me. I had lost a friend. Molly wasn't allowed upstairs, but if I took a nap, she would quietly climb the steps. She had personality. If I ignored her while we were having dinner, she was resonalbly well mannered. But if I looked her in the eyes and turned my head, she would cry and beg. And she loved the outside. She would run from one place to another as fast as she could. When she would stop running, I would walk over to her. Then just as I would be close enough to touch her, she would run. I always thought she knew that I couldn't catch her without great effort. Eventually, sometimes only a few minutes and other times several more, she would run to the steps. And she loved our neighber, Bob. Because he lived across the street and the traffic could become speedy, we were concerned with her suddenly running to Bob's yard. Many times, the first thing she did when we went outside, was to run to the edge of our yard and look toward Bob's house. She would walk along the edge of the yard looking to see if Bob was out in his front yard. Bob loved Molly, too. He had several dogs, himself. Several times when I was unable to convince Molly that she should stay in the yard and "take care of her business" or play with a stick, I would carry her across the street to see Bob. She rolled onto her back, wiggled her tail and cried in excitement. And she seemed to get more excited when he called her name. I am trying to put the last 6 months into this comment section. It's not possible. I am try to talk about loosing a friend. I am glad I found this site. I have a mixed feeling of guilt because there might have been something a vet could have done for her if I wasn't so poor. This feeling is strong because I feel like I betrayed her trust. I have a terrible anxiety everytime I look at where she used to sleep or at the back door where she would beg to come inside when I returned. Molly gave me uncondional love everday. On 2/08/01 we had to send our Kiki (Keisha) on her journey to rainbow bridge after a long hard fight. Like your Luci she started with allergies, which with the help of Prednisone turned in to insulin dependent diabetes (2x daily shots for the past year and 1/2), cataracts and then ear infectiosn from the long terms antibiotics that finally left her almost deaf and then the FINAL STRAW a cancerous tumour at one of her anal sacks. As terrible as all this sounds I had found ways to at stabilize and make it OK for her. Beleive it or not she was a very happy girl the last year until the tumour showed up. My big regret is that I accepted the standard medical answers for so long and did not investigate alternatives until it was to late to save her. My joy is that I was able to provide her a comfortable time towards the end and that she KNEW she was loved (and I know that to my little girl that was MOST IMPORTANT). Dad and Mosey miss you alot too!!!!
